The Tainted Cup by Robert Jackson Bennett

 


A murder mystery set in high fantasy.  There were many elements that I enjoyed in this novel.  The main character, Din was extremely resourceful considering that he had some limitations.  I also loved his investigator.  She was a unique person.  I did however get lost in parts.  I did find some of the names, places, and occupations a little confusing.  There were a lot of different people to follow.  I think this was more of my fault though and there were times that I was just not as focused. The murder in the novel was very unusual and I liked finding all the different connections made along the way.  Overall, not a bad mystery but there is a lot to keep track of in the novel.

I thoroughly enjoyed this dual timeline novel that takes place on the Amalfi Coast in the early 1800s and present day. Mari is a streghe or sea witch in Positano. Mari and other women from her village use the power of the sea to protect their village and help them be prosperous. The only problem is Mari hates the sea and wants to leave her village. The sea took her mother and sister and she no longer wants any part of it. She has a plan to escape and find happiness when things go horribly wrong. In the present day, Haven is an underwater archaeologist. She has been exploring sunken ships since she was a little kid with her father.  This was an excellent start to a new series.   Zo has lost everything when she learns that she has received an inheritance from an unknown relative.  She travels to Divinity, Louisiana and finds out that she stands to inherit millions as well as a home but there are some very strange and constricting conditions.  She soon finds out that everything she has known is not what it seems.  She is thrust into a  world of witches and other paranormal creatures.  She must keep her head and find out everything she can if she is going to survive. Karen Marie Moning is one of my all time favorite authors because of her writing. She blends mystery, romance, fantasy, and suspense in this must read story.  I love that Zo is a strong female.
